"Don't be someone who defines her life by someone else's death."

Dee Dee DeMarco's brother, Alex, was funny, free-spirited and creative. He was also gay. Tormented by bullies, Alex killed himself on his 15th birthday.

Two years later, and now in college, Dee Dee believes getting a summer job working with a college-prep program for disadvantaged high school students is a stroke of luck, until she discovers that the guy assigned to co-lead her group is Cameron Connelly, a star basketball player and one of the bullies who tormented her brother to death. How can Dee Dee possibly spend the entire summer working so closely with one of the boys she blames for her brother's death?

EXCERPT
I could feel my heartbeat quicken as I entered the auditorium. The kids were talking and messing around as they waited for the class to begin. The other counselors, with the exception of Cameron, were also seated in the audience with the kids. Cameron was standing at the podium with Dr. Jones.

When Cameron saw me walk in, he winked at me. I didn't know whether to slap him or hug him. Therein was the problem.

Dr. Jones waved her arms to get everyone's attention. "Quiet everyone. We have a special presentation today. Cameron is going to talk to you about bullying and how it impacted his life."

"Who would bully him?" one of the kids cracked and the other kids laughed.

"Enough," Dr. Jones reprimanded. "I expect you to give Cameron your attention and utmost respect."

Cameron took the podium. "Thank you, Dr. Jones. I'm here today to talk about bullying. Not because I was bullied when I was your age but because I was a bully. And it ruined my life."

When I looked out over the sea of faces, all eyes were trained on Cameron.

"I thought I had everything. I was one of the school's first string basketball players. We were all-state champions. I already had a full basketball scholarship to Penn State. I was popular. I had tons of friends. I could get a date with any girl in the school. And I lost it all."

Review:

This is a very nice, heart warming short story about reconciling lovers at a Christmas party with their close friends.

Norris and Danny's friends are endearing in their way of helping these two forlorn lovers reunite. They set up several chances for Norris and Danny to talk and reconcile. But Norris is too stubborn, afraid, and hurting after Danny left him. Even though Norris was the one who told Danny to get out, he didn't mean it and still regretted saying it. Now Danny is back from Japan and plans to work close to Norris, Norris doesn't know how to handle his own feelings. He rejects Danny twice and Danny is about ready to give up. Their friends, however, want to try one more time to bring them back together.

Missing Moment from Slide

It's been six months since Ash shuffled into Pete's life and turned his world upside down, and six months since they sat in an all-night diner plotting Ash's theoretical solution for Pete's faded, botched tattoo. Pete has just about given up hope of Ash ever fulfilling his promise when one day the end of a long shift finds Ash waiting for him.

Tonight is the night.

Ash is ready, and it seems the time has come for him to leave his mark on Pete in more ways than he ever imagined.

Review:

If you've read Slide, the first book, and liked it, you should definitely consider reading this one. This is a light read focused on a missing moment in Slide of when Ash gives Pete a tattoo. There are no spoilers in the story for the first book.

Originally, Ash is shy and jaded from years of living on the streets, but Pete wins his heart with his personality and trust. They started out as roommates but they eventually become lovers. 6 months later, Ash decides to give Pete a redesigned tattoo to make up for a botched tattoo and this is where the short story starts. I love how this short story shows how well the MCs interact, understand, and lean against each other. Of course, there are some sexy scenes too.

Don’t look back. Don’t you ever look back…

Shy tattoo artist Ash has a troubled past. Years of neglect, drug abuse, and life on the streets have taken their toll, and sometimes it seems the deep, unspoken bond with his lover is the only balm for wounds he doesn’t quite understand.

Chicago paramedic Pete is warmth, love, and strength—things Ash never knew he could have, and never even knew he wanted until Pete showed him. But fate is a cruel, cruel mistress, and when nightmares collide with the present, their tentatively built world comes crashing down.

Traumatic events in Pete’s work life distance him from home, and he doesn’t realize until it’s too late that Ash has slipped away. Betrayal, secrets, and lies unfold, and when a devastating coincidence takes hold, Pete must fight with all he has to save the love of his life.

Review:

This is a really emotional story that leaves me thinking about the MCs beyond the story ending and leaves a slow burning feeling in my heart. This book definitely has a lot of emotional impact.

Part one of the story focuses on how Pete and Ash interacts and forms a romantic relationship. Part two of the book gets into their relationship on a deeper level and shows how Pete and Ash's relationship will last in the face of Pete's unreasonable working schedule, crazy murders in the city that is somehow to connected to them, and Ash's sudden withdrawn personality and emotional depression.

Deadly poison…or exquisite cure?

Noah fell from an eighth story balcony as a toddler, cracking open his skull and shattering his body. The accident would’ve killed a human, but even shifter blood can’t heal some damage. After the pack recommended a mercy killing, Noah’s family ran. But there’s no outrunning the mating pact formed before Noah’s birth.

Wade, the new alpha, chooses an adult Noah to fulfill the pact. Wade believes the previous alpha was a fool to reject Noah as a weak and inferior wolf, but Noah’s family was wrong to hide him and starve his wolf, too. Human doctors with human medicines are poison to shifter physiology. Now that Noah is fully grown, halting his shift to retain the pins, plates, and bars holding him together hurts rather than helps him, and for Wade, more than Noah’s recovery is at stake.

Noah’s family sacrificed everything to keep him alive. Noah will do whatever it takes to save them—including mate with the alpha who is determined to correct past mistakes and defeat old prejudices contaminating the shifter community.

Too bad some still believe Noah is the true poison…and should be culled from the pack for good.

Content Warnings: Dubious consent, shifter knotting/tying, and Nerf gun assassination attempts. Ereaders (and you) may spontaneously combust–-Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

I really like the unique set up of Noah's story about how he's surviving and adapting to life after a very traumatic physical injury. Wade forces Noah's family to give Noah to the pack and mates Noah. Wade doesn't believe in human medication and forces Noah to try shifter remedies. Noah thinks that Wade is keeping him prisoner.

"Auggie? Auggie!" Knock, knock, knock; bang, bang, bang and August frowned in bitter annoyance. If that kept up they were going to be kicked out of the hotel only hours after they'd arrived.

He gritted his teeth and got out of bed, opening the door with exaggerated aggravation. "One," he growled at Doren's grin, "I warned you about calling me Auggie. And two, if you have any fondness whatsoever for your testicles, this better be important."

Doren's smile grew, his eyes sweeping August from top to bottom. "Nice jammies."

August lifted an eyebrow. "What is it, Doren?"

"Come with me," Doren gushed, all excitement and teeth and grabby hands. "I need to show you something."

"It is six in the morning."

Doren's only reply was to snag August's hand and yank him into the hall.

"I thought music people didn't get up this early," August grumped.

Doren turned and winked. "I haven't been to bed yet."

August's goal in life is simple: make an impact in the music industry. An opportunity to work as the personal assistant to Doren seems to be exactly the kind of break he needs to accomplish that goal.

The weather outside is frightful, but this Minnesota northwoods cabin is getting pretty hot.

Stylist Frankie Blackburn never meant to get lost in Logan, Minnesota, but his malfunctioning GPS felt otherwise, and a record-breaking snowfall ensures he won’t be heading back to Minneapolis anytime soon. Being rescued by three sexy lumberjacks is fine as a fantasy, but in reality the biggest of the bears is awfully cranky and seems ready to gobble Frankie right up.

Marcus Gardner wasn’t always a lumberjack—once a high-powered Minneapolis lawyer, he’s come home to Logan to lick his wounds, not play with a sassy city twink who might as well have stepped directly out of his past. But as the northwinds blow and guards come down, Frankie and Marcus find they have a lot more in common than they don’t. Could the man who won’t live in the country and the man who won’t go back to the city truly find a home together? Because the longer it snows, the deeper they fall in love, and all they want for Christmas is each other.

Warning: Contains power outages, excessive snowfall, and incredibly sexy bears.

It Isn’t How You Say the Name; It’s How You Write It

Working with a small press usually gives the author input to her cover. Whiskey Creek is no exception. They asked for my thoughts on what I’d like on the cover and what I didn’t want on my cover. I love having input, but honestly designing a cover is not my forte, so I trust the assigned artist to know more than me and I’m happy to give them the reins.

Angela Archer did a beautiful job on the cover for King of Bad. I was happy with the model she chose for Jeff and I loved her interpretation of Jeff’s opposing abilities of fire and ice. Especially the ice. It’s so beautiful. So many books have fire on the cover and I was impressed that Angela found a unique way to depict it. I excitedly showed my husband and my teenage daughter and they said, “Like it!”

And then my teenage son came home from school and I said, “What do you think?”

Astute son said, “The title – the writing – it’s girlie.”

To which I replied, “Whaaaaat?” and to which my daughter did some epic eye roll-frown thing. Why do I never have a camera when I need one?

They’re very different: a rich kid athlete and a hardworking openly gay scholarship student. But Kurt slips past Freddie’s defenses, and little by little—despite Freddie ignoring his own sexuality in the past—Freddie realizes he wants to get to know Kurt, especially when Kurt helps him through more challenges than their science class. And that's only the beginning of Dennis' suggestive gifts.

Review:

This is a cute, fun short story for Christmas. Martin is surprised by his lover, Dennis, when he receives sexy gifts several days in a row before Christmas. Martin seems like an easy going guy and Dennis is on the fun, kinky side, but he definitely does everything out of love.

Review:

The story mainly focuses on Nicky. He is at an all-time-low when his boyfriend cheats on him and he loses his job and house. He gets back on his feet with house sitting. Much later in the story, when Nicky has built a reputation among rich house owners as a house sitter, he gets together with Spencer. However, he is still too jaded because of his previous boyfriend, Tom, to try for a new relationship with Spencer.

Alone but for his parrot, he spends his days illuminating manuscripts and hiding from the complexities of life. When he discovers Adam asleep in a deck chair, he's furious but intrigued. Adam soon charms his way into Miles' bed, and they lose themselves in a summer idyll, safe from the compromises and claims of reality.

But Adam's life, with all its demands, is waiting for him. And Miles, uncertain of Adam's true feelings, is battling demons of his own. Somehow, the man who's never home and the man who never leaves it must find the strength to fight for a future together.

Review:

The initial meeting between Adam and Miles is very interesting. Adam is completely wiped out after a concert and passes out on Miles' patio, in another town. The next morning when Miles discovers this intruder, his reaction really characterize his personality. Miles mistakes Adam's rock star outfit for a sci-fi costume. He doesn't handle people very well and he's lonely, but he doesn't immediately kick Adam out of his home.

Warning: This is not your typical romance. The story of Abby & Jake contains disturbing situations, graphic violence, sex, rape, strong language, drug use, and all types of abuse.

Abby has been through hell and has survived one of the most brutal childhoods imaginable…barely.

To the outside world she's just a loner with an attitude.

When her grandmother dies in a tragic explosion, Abby is left with questions-and nothing else.

Homeless, sleeping in a junkyard, and on the run from a system that has failed her over and over again, she meets Jake, a tattooed blue-eyed biker with secrets that will rival her own.

Two broken souls that can't be healed. They can't be saved.

Abby & Jake must reveal to one another their most guarded secrets and discover if they can embrace the darkness those secrets hold-and the darkness within themselves.

If they can accept one another for who they really are, they might be able to learn that love isn’t always found in the light.

Templeton and Mikel, a skilled tracker of rogue shifters, are soon not only fighting for their lives, they`re also fighting the rigidly archaic rules of their kind, as well as the person responsible for trying to take over Mikel`s pack from the inside. Can this magical odd couple turn a passionate attraction into a full-fledged love affair?

Review:

I love that there is a hierarchy among shifters and they can be discriminated by species, gender, and sexual orientation. I think this story is more contemporary in terms of the issues the characters are dealing with and how their society is changing. Women are trying to gain positions of power and shifters are fighting for gay rights. The story has a strong underlying message with its romance package.

Zack Sheldon doesn’t have time to be lonely. He’s in his last year as a pediatric resident, almost married to the job, and busy with the joys and sorrows that come with providing medical care to children. Professionally, he’s confident, accomplished, and respected. But personally he’s too insecure to approach a sexy man like Sergio Quartulli, or even to imagine that Sergio might be attracted to him.

Zack spots Sergio from across the gym, and then a chance meeting poolside somehow turns into a date. Before Zack knows it, they’ve become a couple, but Zack’s white coat is his closet at the hospital, and committing to a relationship with Sergio makes it difficult for Zack to continue hiding behind it. On the other hand, he grew up in a small town where being gay was shameful, and he works in an environment that can sometimes be homophobic, so it’s hard for him to open up about who he really is. Before Zack can make a choice on his own terms, circumstances force him to make a decision. He can continue to hide, or he can step out from behind his white coat and risk everything for love.

The first chapter is so exciting! The story starts out with Zach helping to develop a body into the world and mediate any complications. There are a lot of medical terms and procedures, but the chapter also conveys a rush and anticipation. The hospital setting is an integral part of the story and this medical novel clearly shows the pecking order in the hospital. Personality, I love the details and medical terms used in the story, especially since everything is explained so readers without a medical background can understand them. Being a doctor, you really spend a lot of time in the hospital and that is a big part of a doctor's day to day life, so I'm glad the story shows Zach being a doctor the majority of the book.
