Loner Matt Urban has somehow ended up as alpha to a pack of outcasts and misfits. When an injured shifter blunders onto their territory one night, swearing he didn’t know it was pack territory, Matt is suspicious. It doesn’t help that the stranger, Jesse Turner, is as stubborn as Matt. Wanting answers, Matt persuades Jesse to stay a while, and the intense attraction they feel for one another soon blazes into heat. That’s when Matt realizes—the stranger with the smart mouth and the attitude problem is his mate.

Matt, still mourning the lover he lost years ago, doesn’t want a mate, and Jesse doesn’t believe in mates. Yet neither of them can deny the pull they feel toward one another.

They’re still struggling with the situation when a hostile alpha claims Jesse. Matt has to fight to protect Jesse. First, though, he has to fight Jesse’s stubborn independence if he’s to win his heart.

Excerpt 2:

Jesse froze in the doorway in front of Matt. “Crap.”

“What?” Matt couldn’t see anything wrong. Bryce and Tristan were setting the table, while Jason was doing something at the stove which involved frying onions and garlic and smelled fantastic.

“You didn’t tell me Bryce is a damn cop,” Jesse said, turning betrayed eyes on Matt.

“You haven’t any warrants out against you, have you?” Matt asked. He’d checked that the first evening Jesse had been with them and he’d come up clean, but he might have used other names.

Jesse scoffed. “I ain’t stupid, Matt. Just had a few run-ins over the years is all.”

“Imagine that,” Matt marveled. “Who’d have thought it, with your smart mouth and oh-so-agreeable attitude, running up against America’s finest. Speaking of which, you should probably know—Bryce is my deputy. I’m sheriff of Elk Ridge.”

The open-mouthed shock on Jesse’s face was a moment Matt treasured. He guessed it wasn’t often anyone blindsided Jesse.

“Well, hell, Urban,” Jesse drawled, as he recovered his equilibrium. “You should have told me that earlier. We could have had fun with your handcuffs.”

Damn that kid, if that didn’t throw Matt completely off balance. And he knew it, the little bastard, leaving Matt gaping behind him as he waltzed into the kitchen as though he belonged, his pert ass shown off beautifully by his frayed and faded jeans.
Adina Falling

Matt is a bad ass alpha who left a pack and ends up forming his own. He finds Jesse wounded in his territory and knows that's his mate. Jesse is a smart ass to everyone but has a soft spot for horses. He guards his independence and doesn't really know how to function in a pack of wolves because he was raised by humans. Later, he learns to trust in others and share his time. Trouble comes in the form of an aggressive alpha that wounded Jesse and chased him into Matt's territory. No one knows what this alpha wants but Matt and his pack are prepared to fight for their family, land, and mate.

Jesse's back story is a little lacking. Since he was not raised in a pack, his experience would be more interesting and provide a view of how the world functions with shifters and humans. How did he survive in the wild on his own? It's interesting to read that Jesse didn't know he didn't have to use a condom since he's a shifter and have enhanced healing abilities until Matt told him. He's capable of taking care of himself but he's still young and naive about who he is.

I really enjoy reading about other character and picking up on their personalities. Each member of the pack are unique and have a distinctive voice. I would have liked to see more of their ranch, horses, and learn more about the Argents, the special species of wolf shifters that supposedly died out.

The story ended at the perfect place. The world-building is well done. The existing tension between humans and shifters is clear in the story but they also help each other. The cultural beliefs of how shifters came to be is interesting and unique to this world. It would be nice if the story adds on an epilogue to tell how Jesse and Matt's lives will change after their discovery of an Argent. The pacing is easy to follow.

This is a great read with exciting fight scenes and hot sex. I definitely recommend this for fans of shifter romance and m/m romance.

Joy Lynn Fielding is a sucker for happy endings. She believes, however, that if characters don’t suffer along the way, they won’t fully appreciate being happy. Not all of her characters thank her for this viewpoint, but what do they know?

Joy lives in a small English market town. She has a tendency to share enthusiastically with anyone who will listen to the latest fascinating facts she’s stumbled across in her research for books. Thankfully she has a very patient Labrador, who has a gift for looking as though he’s interested in what she’s saying while he waits for the food to arrive.
