Blurb:

Vy Aleknos is the leader of a hawk shifter flock. Openly gay since he was a teen, Vy is proud and self-assured on the outside, while secretly worrying he’ll be forced to spend his life alone because two males can’t be mates. When bear shifter Robert Cimino appears in Vy’s small town, Vy realizes his concerns were unfounded — he has a male mate, and a sexy, dominant one to boot.

Robert is a bear shifter who refuses to shift. Immediately attracted to Vy, he deviates from his normal pattern and seeks more than a one off with the powerful, bristly hawk. But Robert’s affections are rooted in his human form, and when Vy discovers Robert doesn't recognize him as his mate, he pulls away. If Robert wants to stay with Vy, he must convince a man deeply ruled by his animal instincts to give their relationship as humans a chance.

Review:

Vy is the leader of his ket, a flock of hawk shape shifters. He catches his mate's scent and finds Robert, a wandering bear shifter that rejects his bear side and prefers his human side. Vy desperately wants his ket to accept Robert but trouble with a neighboring wolf shifter pack further alienates Robert from Vy's ket. Added to that, Robert's secret makes Vy hard to accept him as a mate.

The romance is based on the mating bond shared by Vy and Robert. There are unexplained attraction, protectiveness, and lust between them. They are a predestined couple and Robert have trouble accepting that. This causes pain for Vy because he believes in fate. It takes family visits and fighting with a wolf pack for Vy and Robert to accept each other as mates even though Vy already knew this to be true.

I love how the MC's jobs fit their personality. Vy is head of a construction company in town. He may be smaller in body size but he's a leader that people look up to and isn't afraid of hard work. Robert is something like an environmental health field worker. It's very fitting for his bear side to be close to nature and be able to wander the country. Robert is also a very caring and cuddling person on the inside. In their relationship, Vy wants to be taken care of and Robert wants to take care of Vy.

The storytelling is great except in two spots where the time frame is confusing. The story is told by alternating Vy and Robert's perspectives. Time may skip between chapters and there are flashbacks once in a while. I feel the storyline would be better if time flows linearly with the storytelling.

I really enjoyed the dynamics between the different types of shifters and humans. I was really excited to read a paranormal story by two of my favorite authors in collaboration. They didn't disappoint me and I would definitely look forward to future stories by them. I recommend this book for shifter fans and those who don't mind "lust at first sight."
