Howard Justinian has always had to fight for his freedom. Because he was born blind, everyone is always trying to shelter him, but he’s determined to live his life on his own terms.
When an argument with his boyfriend over that hard-won self-reliance leaves Howard stranded by the side of the road, assistance arrives in the form of Gordy Jarrett. Gordy is a missionary’s son, so helping others is second nature—and he does it in such an unassuming manner that Howard can’t say no.
Life is barely back on track when Howard receives shocking news: his sister died, leaving him her daughter to care for. Howard now faces his greatest challenge yet: for Sophia’s safety, he’ll need to accept help, but will he learn to accept it from Gordy, the one man who will not curb his independence?

Howard is born blind but wants to be independent and live a normal life. When Cedric, his ex boyfriend, dumps him by the side of a highway, Gordy comes along and helps him out. As Howard gets a guide dog and deals with death in the family, his relationship with Gordy deepens.
As the story progresses, Howard gets more responsibility and actually becomes as independent as he wished. He gets a leader dog to guide him and also gains experience taking care of another rather than letting others take care of him. Later on, he steps up for his family and takes responsibility for his niece. I love the way the story progresses and shows how much Howard grew to live independently but also become someone who's don't afraid to ask others for help. His relationship with Gordy and his niece are portrayed wonderfully.
Gordy is a softhearted giant man from a homophobic family. He understands Howard's need for independence and doesn't want to control him like Cedric. Sometimes, he knows Howard better than himself and gives him space. All in all, he has a very caring and considerate personality that fits perfectly with Howard's.
The story events are on the mild side. Nothing thrilling or suspenseful happens that have me gripping my seat and turning the pages. The main attraction to the story is to see how Howard grows as an adult and cope with changes in his life, from having a lover to taking custody of a child.
Fans of Andrew Grey's earlier work, Love Comes Silently, would enjoy to have Ken, Hanna, and Patrick back and see how their lives continue on. Love Comes in Darkness isn't as intense and doesn't have the threat of death hanging around for the majority of the story like Love Comes Silently, but it is still a very enjoyable read.
